Pune, 18th February, 2019: Humjoli Foundation recently conducted awareness camps and sessions for girls, women and men in Pune on educating them about menstrual health and hygiene. Founded by Dr Sania Siddiqui, an award winning trainer for her work on Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao, Humjoli works at two levels. One, they conduct ‘Period Talk’ sessions at schools, communities and other similar setups where they reach out to girls and women who come from low-income group and need this education the most. Second, they train volunteers and prepare them to spread the right knowledge about menstrual health & hygiene by taking similar sessions independently on their own at various other locations.
Period Talk Sessions cover explaining the physiology of menstruation, how to maintain personal hygiene during period days, diseases and issues which may result by using dirty cloth to absorb blood and busting myths and taboos related with menstruation.
The sessions are taken by Dr. Sania Siddiqui, Founder, Humjoli Foundation. Explaining further, Dr. Siddiqui said, “Periods are as natural a process as the beating of heart or breathing is. If other physiological processes of body are considered normal and no stigma or shame is attached with them, hushing and whispering about periods is also not cool. She further adds, “Training the volunteers will lead to the branching effect and the awareness will reach far and wide.”
Other than Period Talk classroom sessions and volunteer training session, Dr. Siddiqui take special sessions for boys, community sessions and on good touch-bad touch. Besides working with low-income group ladies and girls, she also takes corporate sessions for employees of organisations where she talks about menstrual health in general, importance of hygiene during periods, what’s normal and what is not during the period, diseases and infections caused due to poor menstrual hygiene, sanitation & disposal, usage and pros-&-cons of other menstrual hygiene products beyond sanitary pads such as menstrual cup, tampon and reusable cloth pads, busting myths and taboos around menstruation, hacks & tricks to have a smooth period and dealing with menopause.
Dr. Siddiqui is the Founder of a non-profit organisation Humjoli Foundation, which works towards creating awareness on menstrual health and hygiene especially among low-income group women and young girls. She is also the Co-Founder of a non-profit school which is run specifically for the children of rag pickers and daily wagers.
